Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) play a crucial role in all stages of an operation, working alongside surgeons, anaesthetists, and theatre nurses to provide exceptional care to patients before, during, and after surgery. With a focus on maintaining high standards of skilled care, ODPs contribute significantly to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of every procedure. General Responsibilities: 1. Anaesthetic Phase: 2. - Assisting and supporting patients prior to surgery 3. - Providing individualized care and identification of patients 4. - Preparing specialized equipment and drugs, such as anaesthetic machines and intravenous devices, ensuring the patient's airway is safely secured during anaesthesia 5. 6. Surgery Phase: 7. - Organizing and preparing all necessary instruments and equipment, including microscopes, lasers, and endoscopes 8. - Supplying the surgeon with the appropriate surgical instruments and materials 9. - Ensuring meticulous tracking of surgical instruments, equipment, and swabs throughout the operation to prevent any loss or retention inside the patient 10. - Acting as a liaison between the surgical team and other departments within the theatre and hospital 11. - Anticipating and promptly responding to the needs of the surgical team 12. 13. Recovery Phase: 14. - Safely transporting the patient to the recovery room 15. - Providing continuous support and monitoring upon arrival in the recovery unit 16. - Administering appropriate treatment until the patient has fully recovered from the effects of anaesthesia and/or surgery 17. - Offering pain relief measures to patients 18. - Conducting assessments to determine when the patient can be discharged back to a ward
